I am going to take what I'm pretty sure is going to be a very unpopular position on something. Well unpopular for most of the people who usually agree with me. I feel kind of weird about my opinion on this myself actually, but there it is.
We should NOT forgive or "grandfather in" any illegal aliens already in this country. AND we should prevent as many as possible from coming in, and we should send any of them we find back where they came from.
Ok, I'm prepared for the verbal bashing, but here's my thinking on this.
I feel the utmost sympathy for anyone living in Mexico. Yes, it probably really sucks to live there in some areas. I don't blame folks for wanting to get out and go somewhere where their families have a chance for a better life.
--However--
There are legal channels to enter this country. We don't have closed borders. I'm all for people entering this country using these legal means at as great a rate as possible. I'm all about people getting a better standard of living, but there HAVE to be limits! The United States isn't the INFINITE Land of Milk and Honey. Approximatley 5% of the population owns about 90% of the wealth in this country and they're holding onto it with both fists. The government isn't giving money to the people who were born here who need it. People who were born here can't get jobs because they can't afford to live on the $5 or $6 an hour an illegal is happy to make because they don't have to pay taxes/social security whatever else comes out of our checks. They can pay taxes if they choose to. And some do. But the majority don't, yet they still go to the hospital and take advantage of the mandatory medical care it is required to give.
I know. I sound like an ignorant, redneck republican. But I'm sorry, this is the reality. I would LOVE to have universal medicine in this country, but we don't. I would love to have a mandatory livable minimum wage, mandatory affordable housing for everyone and madatory descent education for all children. But the reality is it's just not there! And under the current administration it never will be! Until we don't have to fight, scrape and claw in order to keep our heads above water, I just can't justify it.
The only, and I do mean ONLY reason the republicans are all behind this is because these illegals will work for so little. And won't join a union. And won't demand a descent insurance package. Or retirement contribution. The republicans wish we would ALL be like that and they know that if they keep letting the illegals in and give them jobs we will have to become like that in order to survive. They are trying to turn the United States into another Mexico. So once the average american is making 50 cents an hour what's going to happen? Are we going to start running the border into Canada to make a better life for our families?
That's all I'm saying. It may help some in the short run, but it's only going to make it worse for the majority in the long run.
